So, on Friday I was asked by Brockett Horne and Ellen Lupton—respectively of the undergrad and graduate graphic design departments at MICA—to give a talk to professors and graduate students about how to teach students to design good web typography.
As I was creating the presentation, I realized that I was mentioning a lot of sites, so I created a page that contained all those links. Eventually it struck me that these links might not be only useful to those who attended my talk, but also the general population of the internet.
Enjoy!

These photos are simply amazing. I would have no clue on how to begin.

Augh, @youngjerks! I’m so screwed. Now I have to come up with something super clever.

Saul Bass Pitches the new Bell System Logo. Amazing, sometimes over the top, brand pitch. Thanks to @benbours

These Hermès windows from House Industries are awesome! Next can we have a video of them in action?

A half-tone font already seems like a nigh impossible task. Toss in the fact that this was made in FontStruct, makes this absolutely amazing.

stewf:

Badger Spine is a font by Holly Dennis created in FontStruct, which means it’s made of modular “bricks” in basic shapes like circles, rectangles, and diagonals. Really. Even ignoring that incredible fact, it’s a beautiful design inspired by some of nature’s own building blocks.

Yanone created Speed Punk while we were in t]m together. Great to finally see it’s coming together!

I’m amazed by the quality of the work put into The Momentus Project, a project akin to the 50&50 project of this spring. Instead of illustrators recreating their state mottos, they are illustrating their chosen “defining moment in United States history.”

I was reading another article about Susan Kare, the designer of the fonts and icons for the early Mac, and I came across a strange comment that the original fonts—Chicago, Monaco, Geneva, New York, etc.—were originally named after towns near where I grew up in suburban Philadelphia. I googled, and I got this Folklore entry, written by Kare herself. Apparently they were named for stops on the Paoli-Thorndale bound R5—Rosemont, Ardmore, Overbrook, Merion. Also, see this interview.

New identity for St. Bart’s Church by The Original Champions of Design caught my eye. Type design by Jesse Ragan.
“Architectural style drove the visual strategy so much that the typography was lifted directly from the building facade.” Legendary designer Massimo Vignelli once said in an interview with Type Radio that his dream project would be to redesign the corporate identity of The Vatican. “I would tell them to keep the symbol. That’s good, but everything else needs to go.”
