For Steve

You nailed it, Frank.

The world gives us so few who provide a way for us all to see in new ways. It always hurts when they leave. The effused sadness that has spread through the internet from the news of Steve Jobs’ death is to be expected. We lament when things are taken from us, and I’d say that Jobs’ death (like…

Drewbot: On Facebook Timeline: Teaching Data to Speak Humanely

I think the new Timeline profile design is a great step in the right direction.

dbreunig:

Yesterday, Facebook unveiled their new “Timeline” design. Largely imagined by Sam Lessin and Nicholas Feltron, the design coaxes personal actions recorded by Facebook into a humane, emotional, interface for a given history1. Users can delve into their content not as images, notes, and…

Ten Paces and Draw, again, one of the best illustration blogs on the internet (in my opinion), just posted a really nice interview with the wickedly talented Niv (“Neev”) Bavarsky. Go check out the Q&A with Niv Bavarsky, and then get in touch with him for all your illustration needs!

My freshman year of college, I had an art history teacher that was very easy to get to know. Many of the students in my class wanted to be printmakers, illustrators or sculptors, but I already knew that I wanted to be a graphic designer (since before applying to MICA, even). One day, he comes in with a big old stack of Emigre catalogs. He told me that he had them sitting around at home, as they had been mailed to him for some reason, and he thought that I should have them. “Sometimes, it pays to be known for something” he told me.
Now, finally, you can get those same catalogs online! Make sure to check them out here!

This is a fantastic collection of slides from the TypeCon 2011 talk “Where the Rubber Meets the Road: Where are Designers Going with Web Fonts?” by Scott Boms (@scottboms), Brian Warren (@mrwarren) & Luke Dorny (@luxuryluke). I love the findings from the survey they did:

→ 94% of survey responders use Web Fonts

→ 91% want better quality fonts rather than more of them

→ 66% like the hosted web font services rather than hosting their own

The raw data from the survey can be found here.

Thanks to Petr (@petrvanblokland) and Stephen (@typographica) for the simultaneous heads up.
