Weather Warning Signals

This is a fantastic collection of slides from the TypeCon 2011 talk “Where the Rubber Meets the Road: Where are Designers Going with Web Fonts?” by Scott Boms (@scottboms), Brian Warren (@mrwarren) & Luke Dorny (@luxuryluke). I love the findings from the survey they did:

→ 94% of survey responders use Web Fonts

→ 91% want better quality fonts rather than more of them

→ 66% like the hosted web font services rather than hosting their own

The raw data from the survey can be found here.

Thanks to Petr (@petrvanblokland) and Stephen (@typographica) for the simultaneous heads up.

Perfect illustration of how variation in type can be all about contrast and counters, not just weight and width.

Ten Paces and Draw is probably one of my favorite blogs at the moment. One person does a sketch on a weekly theme, then another person colors it and does the sketch for the next day. It’s a whole bunch of my illustration friends doing a whole bunch of awesome work. Definitely make sure to put it in your rss reader.

I think this is the best possible combination of propane gas, home pluming, open flames, and rock music.

Next time I go to Typo Berlin, I’m freaking staying in this place…

I was introduced to Caro Emerald videos thanks to the Vette Letters talk during Typo Berlin. Donald and Donald were asked to do the Saul Bass-ish lettering treatment on the “That Man” video and I think they did a great job.

The second video looks to be the same director, taking a similar trip through 40’s-60’s visual culture. I don’t know who did the lettering though. Look for a very Globe Poster “In Person!” call out at 0:50.

New Typefaces released at Typo Berlin 2011

Thurday it seemed like every other lecture I went to, someone was releasing a typeface! It started out with Peter Biľak, when he released in the morning Elementar, a parametric typeface with a whoping 420 fonts, concepted by t]m alumnus Gustavo Ferreira (@hipertipo).

The second came when Kris Sowersby (@klimtypefoundry) took the stage in the afternoon and announced that he will be releasing Calibre and Metric, two typefaces designed to be Geometric in style, but differ in key letters and thus look like two completely different typefaces. The project was initially inspired by the wonderful street signs they have in Berlin.

The third was František Štorm, who came right after Kris and gave a really hilarious presentation. He released the sans version of his Andulka family. I could use an image from his website to show you, but I rather would like to use a slide from his presentation:

When I brought up the fact that there were so many releases on Thursday to Peter Biľak, he mentioned that it was more than a coincidence, having a conference to present at is a good form of motivation to put in the work to try to finish a project that had been lingering, as most type projects do.

If there were any more typefaces released during Typo, let me know! I would love to add them. Get me on Twitter, @colinmford.

Now that’s one good looking laptop! The flexbook is a concept tablet/ebook/netbook that folds and swivels to your liking. I wonder how the bending screen would work, though… The project was designed for the ‘FUJITSU design award: a life with future computing’ competition, organized by designboom in collaboration with FUJITSU. Looks better than the original, I would say. Though the R could have used more modification, that sharp corner doesn’t seem to fit.
